This Homemade Belgian Waffle Recipe is easy and makes delicious, authentic, Belgian waffles! These waffles are perfectly crisp and golden on the outside while being light and fluffy on the inside!
Waffles:
Waffles are a classic breakfast and brunch staple that have become so popular because of their amazing crispy golden exterior with deep pockets for holding syrup and butter! My family would have these waffles every single weekend, and in fact, sometimes I get up early on a weekday morning because I'm craving them! Everyone knows and loves getting waffles at their favorite breakfast restaurants, and they're truly just as easy to make at home! Want more waffles all the time like we do? Try out these Blueberry Waffles they're so easy!!
Belgian Waffle:
Belgian waffles are similar to classic waffles, except that they have deeper pockets due to being made in a Belgian Waffle Maker. Belgian waffles are also very light and airy inside. Traditionally this was due to them being made with yeast. Generally today they are made with baking powder, like in my recipe. In order to keep the waffles light, we beat the egg whites separately from the yolks, then, fold them into the batter at the end.
Because of the major texture difference, you cannot use pancake batter to make these waffles!
In the picture below you can see how simple it is to make your Belgian waffle batter. First, you will whisk together your dry ingredients.
Then, separate your egg whites from the yolks (example in the video right above our recipe card). Mix all of your wet ingredients except for the egg whites together and then combine them with the dry ingredients.
Beat your egg whites in their bowl until stiff peaks form. Then, use a spatula to fold the egg whites into the batter. It's ok if the batter is a bit lumpy, don't over stir.
What to Serve with Belgian Waffles:
We like to serve our Belgian waffles with powdered sugar, syrup, sliced fruit, and sometimes whipped cream for topping! These waffles make a hearty breakfast on their own, but, they are also great with savory sides like scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, or your favorite bacon!
How to Reheat Belgian Waffles:
First, if you want to save some of these waffles for later I recommend only refrigerating them for a couple of days. Otherwise, you can freeze them in freezer safe bags for a few weeks.
You will want to reheat them in the oven instead of the microwave to keep them nice and crispy! I recommend placing them right on the oven rack at 250 degrees for about ten minutes.
Enjoy!

Since getting my waffler maker I've tried recipes with yeast, baking powder plus unwhisked egg white, and then with whisked whites. The whisked whites is hands down the best recipe, and well worth the extra bowl to wash up! If there are any left to reheat later (ha!) then I find the toaster on the lowest setting works pretty well too!
Can I substitute the vegetable oil with melted butter or avocado oil instead?
Great waffles
Super yummy waffles. I made them Sunday morning and have been craving them every morning since! I wasn’t sure about the cinnamon, but it adds the perfect hint of flavor. This recipe is going in my recipe box for sure!
These are absolutely hands down the best Belgian waffles I've ever had. Super crispy outside and soft and tender inside. I'm currently making a freezing a batch. They reheat beautifully in an air fryer.
This was my go to recipe last year and still is. It’s awesome. Super fluffy and light waffles. I double the vanilla and just eye ball a few dashes of cinnamon. I never over fold the egg whites (I leave small lumps) and it works perfectly with my “Mini Waffle” maker. For the mini waffle maker I just use two heaping tablespoons to make a perfect one. I even halve the recipe and it works great. Thank you for the recipe
These are our go to waffles. Amazing. My husband commented recently that they didn’t even need syrup. They were that good. I usually make 1-1/2 times the recipe. I bake and wrap each waffle in deli paper and freeze in large heavy duty sealable bags we get on Amazon. Family can help themselves during the week as needed. I also make a blueberry compote to serve on top. Yummy. Thanks for recipe.
i made that recipe in my old toastess waffle maker does the job but i would not put the cinnamon , i love cinnamon but i eat my waffle with ginger sirup . Beside that very good recipe, i try many recipe but this one very good.
The recipe was easy to make. I may not have gotten the egg whites fluffy enough because the waffles seemed a bit heavy. Otherwise delicious. I will give it another try. Thanks!
One of the best waffles anyone can make at home. Strongly recommend everyone to try. This waffle has the perfect crisp and taste.
Amazing do try! The waffles were airy, light and crisp! Soo delicious my family loves them!
This recipe is my go-to recipe whenever my family has a taste for homemade waffles. When I first came across this recipe several years ago, I was nervous because of the steps like beating of the egg whites and folding them in at the end, but I made the waffles as directed and my family RAVED over them. It’s been over 3 years and I only use your recipe for Belgium waffles! They’re always crispy on the outside, fluffy and light on the inside, and devoured by my sons as they come off the waffle iron. I’ve made some tweaks now and then like extra vanilla, sugar, or Grand Marnier for adults brunch. I also bought some pearl sugar balls and have added them to the batter just before closing the iron for extra fun. Thank you so much for this delicious recipe! It’s been a hit in my home!
I made these today and I’m obsessed.
Absolutely delicious! My children are obsessed! So grateful for this now weekend staple. Thank you!
Household favorite. This is our go to recipe. We swap ~1 cup flour for protein powder
I have been using this recipe for years and it never fails me. By this point, I have it completely memorized. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would.
This Belgian waffle recipe is second to none! My whole family loves it, even the pickiest of my grandchildren. I do add various fresh fruits and whipped topping, and some they like the organic dark chocolate chips added,😋 yummy
Could I add blended banana to the batter to make banana waffles?
Excellent recipe. The waffles are light and fluffy!
Can this be made using a regular waffle iron versus a Belgian iron? I'm wondering if the deepness of the pattern in the iron makes all the difference....(?)
If you use a Belgian waffle recipe with a regular waffle iron, you just have a lot more batter for more waffles!
This was the best waffle recipe I have tried! Lacey crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Anyway to make it eggless for someone with an egg allergy? I thought of aguafaba for the egg whites but wouldn’t know how to make up for the yolks.
My momma would always sub applesauce for the egg in her pancakes and they are phenomenal. You’d never be able to tell it was eggless and honestly it makes them more moist. I’m not sure on the ratio but I’m sure google could help with that!
Flax egg for the yolks
Loved it! I added an extra 1/2 tsp each of cinnamon and vanilla extract since I was making a waffle sundae. I topped it off with Nutella, sliced strawberries and bananas, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yum!
