homemade ranch dressing

We are undeniably a bunch of ranch dressing freaks in my house!  Of course, the common thing to do is put it on a salad, but, I can’t lie, we even eat it with PIZZA!  Bottled ranch is fine, and I don’t mind it one bit. But, homemade is always better when it comes down to flavor.  The best thing is, this ranch is made with ingredients I always have on hand and only takes a few minutes to whisk up.  I like keeping this dressing on hand so that I can put out a veggie tray to go along with dinner too, the quickest side dish ever!

How To make Homemade Ranch Dressing:

I’ve done a couple of process shots for this recipe so that you can see the starting point, the texture in between, plus the end result.  I like to use mayonnaise and sour cream for this recipe.  You can use Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream if you prefer.

seasonings for ranch dressing

You will want to whisk together your mayonnaise, sour cream, and seasonings until well combined.  You will see that at this point you have a very thick mixture.  This is a starting point for you to make the dressing as thick or thin as you prefer.  If you want a nice thick dip, you can add less buttermilk, if you like your dressing quite thin for your salads, simply add more!

how to make ranch dressing

I start with 3/4 Cup of Buttermilk for this recipe.  If you know you want a thick dip-like consistency, start with 1/2 cup and work your way up from there.  Note that you can also use regular milk for this dressing.  I would recommend using whole milk for the creamiest texture.

At this point, taste your dressing and then add in any extra seasoning to taste.  You can serve this right away, but, it has the best flavor after it has been chilled for a couple of hours.  This ranch dressing can be stored in an airtight container for up to one week.

This came out amazing! I didn’t have dried chives so subbed out additional dill. Next time will definitely have the chives but still so good. Goodbye to premade forever. Thanks so much for the awesome recipe

  2. Which brand of mayo tastes the best? The mayo flavor usually overpowers the ranch flavor for other ranch recipes I have made in the past. I don’t want it to taste like mayo dressing.

      1. Thank you so much for this recipie its simple and sounds delicious. I am a huge lover of Buffalow Chicken Wings and Franks Red Hot mixed with Ranch is for some reason a flavor I will die for lol. Your recipe had provided me with a cost effective way to have ranch on hand as Mayo is a staple in our home. Love what you do pls never stop! 😀

Hi Nichole! I love this recipe! It’s the best ranch I’ve ever had. I keep heavy whipping cream on hand and it’s about the only dairy liquid I use now that I’m on Keto (which I have to say has been amazing so far!) To make a buttermilk, I added lemon. So easy! I also made homemade mayonnaise with avocado oil and olive mixed. It came out beautifully! Thanks so much!!

I have tried numerous ranch dressing recipes over the years, and finally found one that is just right! Thank you. I’ve made it several times already, there’s almost always a batch in the fridge.

I made this last night. It was wonderful! I’ll never buy Ranch dressing again. I did use fresh parsley as I had some in my garden.

    Hi,

What is the purpose of using Onion and Garlic powder instead of actual Onions and Garlic?

    1. probably the onion and garlic have too much liquid for the recipe because you want it to be thick

    2. Garlic and onion would overpower the Ranch flavor, they would also change the texture and the garlic and onion flavor will get stronger and stronger over time. You have a lot more control with the dried spices and they won’t get stronger. If you want to use real G&O I would grate a bit of both and keep them in a separate container and add them into the dressing right before you use it. Hope this helps!

Great recipe!! I’ve made a couple of times and like you said can make as thick or thin as you like and add more or less herbs. Perfect !

  8. Your ranch dressing looks yummy, just bought a packet from the store to make and it was salty, so next time I’ll try yours, do you happen to have a Mac n cheese recipe, I have one that’s easy, but lacks the flavor of the harder more time consuming ones
