This Homemade Belgian Waffle Recipe is easy and makes delicious, authentic, Belgian waffles! These waffles are perfectly crisp and golden on the outside while being light and fluffy on the inside!
Waffles:
Waffles are a classic breakfast and brunch staple that have become so popular because of their amazing crispy golden exterior with deep pockets for holding syrup and butter! My family would have these waffles every single weekend, and in fact, sometimes I get up early on a weekday morning because I'm craving them! Everyone knows and loves getting waffles at their favorite breakfast restaurants, and they're truly just as easy to make at home! Want more waffles all the time like we do? Try out these Blueberry Waffles they're so easy!!
Belgian Waffle:
Belgian waffles are similar to classic waffles, except that they have deeper pockets due to being made in a Belgian Waffle Maker. Belgian waffles are also very light and airy inside. Traditionally this was due to them being made with yeast. Generally today they are made with baking powder, like in my recipe. In order to keep the waffles light, we beat the egg whites separately from the yolks, then, fold them into the batter at the end.
Because of the major texture difference, you cannot use pancake batter to make these waffles!
In the picture below you can see how simple it is to make your Belgian waffle batter. First, you will whisk together your dry ingredients.
Then, separate your egg whites from the yolks (example in the video right above our recipe card). Mix all of your wet ingredients except for the egg whites together and then combine them with the dry ingredients.
Beat your egg whites in their bowl until stiff peaks form. Then, use a spatula to fold the egg whites into the batter. It's ok if the batter is a bit lumpy, don't over stir.
What to Serve with Belgian Waffles:
We like to serve our Belgian waffles with powdered sugar, syrup, sliced fruit, and sometimes whipped cream for topping! These waffles make a hearty breakfast on their own, but, they are also great with savory sides like scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, or your favorite bacon!
How to Reheat Belgian Waffles:
First, if you want to save some of these waffles for later I recommend only refrigerating them for a couple of days. Otherwise, you can freeze them in freezer safe bags for a few weeks.
You will want to reheat them in the oven instead of the microwave to keep them nice and crispy! I recommend placing them right on the oven rack at 250 degrees for about ten minutes.
Enjoy!

Fluffy & delish! Whipping the egg whites is key to success. I only had 1 cup of milk, so used 1/2 c of Greek yogurt & 1/2 c of heavy cream, plus a little water for the remaining 1 cup of liquid. Recipe is a keeper!
Super easy to make and authentic. My husband loved them.
Thank you for this great recipe! Waffles came out delicious 🙂 I’m tempted to substitute the sugar with maple sirup though… any thoughts or suggestions?
We thought the same thing, or with dark brown sugar. I will try that next time.
This is my go-to waffle recipe. Excellent taste and texture. The only change I’ve made is to use 1/2 cup melted butter instead of oil. These are great fresh, and I like to freeze leftovers for quick weekday breakfasts.
This website is so frustrating as it keeps moving where i was reading. Recipe is good though
Hi! Thanks for letting me know that is happening so that we can get the issue fixed shortly! Glad you enjoyed the recipe 🙂
Love these waffles! I’ve made them several times following the recipe to a “t” with rave reviews every time. Today I made a slight variation by adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder and upped the milk by 1/4 cup to compensate for the extra dry ingredient. Used a blend of unbleached white and whole grain flours and unsweetened coconut milk drink because that’s all I had and they turned out great! This recipe seems to be amazing as is and a foundation for variations! Thank you!
Followed the recipe and these were great! I’ve been looking for a waffle recipe using egg whites, mine is boxed up from our move. The cinnamon is a nice addition. Next time I think I’ll only use a half teaspoon and some toasted chopped pecans. Thank you for sharing, it is a great base with endless options to build on!
Fantastic breakfast. Nothing better to enjoy on a Sunday morning than the greatest American breakfast, Belgiun Waffles.
Made this today and loved it 🙂 We have some leftover batter. How long do they keep for? Thank you!
I cook all of the batter and freeze leftover waffles. They freeze and reheat well. I just stick them in the toaster.
I've made these waffles so many times, and they always turn out amazing. By far, the best waffles - and my entire family agrees. Thanks for the recipe!
Delicious. The cinnamon really works in this waffle
Delicious and easy!
Tried this recipe for the first time, it was super easy and delicious!! My kids loved it, thank you!!
Absolutely delicious waffles!! Yum!! Will definitely be using this recipe again
My kids got crazy with them!!!
5 from 5 stars! Well done
This is my favorite waffle recipe. They come out perfect every time. I also make these with gluten free 1-1 flour and you can’t tell the difference.
My son did this recipe using a gluten free 1-to-1 flour and it turned out great. Even the non-GF people in our family enjoyed it1
Made these twice. First time as written and came out delicious. The kids loved the hint of cinnamon. The second time I had some substitutions. Used all purpose spelt flour, and used watered down yogurt in place of the milk. Came out delicious again. This will be my basic go to waffle recipe going forward.
Great recipe! I’d personally add slightly more sugar the next time, but it’s fantastic!
Absolutely amazing recipe! I have tried a few different recipes and have tried many different boxed waffle/pancake mixes and this by far is the best.
Things I did differently:
1) I only had medium eggs so I used 3 and separated as mentioned above.
2) I used melted salted Butter so I only added a pinch of salt to dry ingredients.
3) I always add nutmeg to my baking that calls for cinnamon and probably added 3/4 of thr amount of cinnamon listed and just a pinch of nutmeg.
4) I also like to add a couple drops of banana flavor extract to my waffles, pancakes and crepes. You don't really get a distinct banana flavor it just changes the sugar taste and makes it more rich.
