Chicken Burgers

If you’re tired of the typical beef burger, you’ve stumbled across the perfect recipe! Chicken burgers are my latest obsession and for good reason. They’re juicy, tender, and loaded with the very best combo of spices that can be adjusted for your tastes. For the best bite, I like to serve my chicken patties on toasted buns with cheese, butter lettuce and a thick tomato slice. While a classic burger is always nice, I really love how much lighter (and still so filling) chicken burgers are! Perfect for serving up on a hot summer day with friends or as a fun family weeknight dinner.

How do I know if a chicken burger is fully cooked?

The safest way to ensure your chicken patties are fully cooked is to use a meat thermometer! Insert it into the patty. Once it reads 165°F, the chicken is fully cooked and safe to eat.

How to Make Chicken Burgers

  • Make the patties. Mix together the ground chicken, breadcrumbs, egg, onion and seasonings until thoroughly combined. Divide this mixture into 6 equal parts.
  • Cook the patties on your stovetop. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and coat with oil. Cook the patties in batches of 3 for about 4 minutes per side or until fully cooked all the way through.
  • Or, grill them. Spray your grill with non-stick spray or brush with oil and heat to medium-low heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4 minutes per side or until fully cooked.
  • Rest and drain. Set the cooked patties on paper towels so they have a few minutes to rest (this is what will keep them juicy) and so they can drain any excess grease.
  • Assemble the burgers. Toast the buns. Once toasted, spread some mayo on the buns and top with lettuce, tomato, the chicken patty and a slice of your favorite cheese.

Storing Chicken Burgers

You can store cooked chicken patties by themselves in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Make sure they’ve had time to fully cool to room temperature prior to storing! For the best reheated results, pop them in the air fryer or back on your stove top and cook just until warmed through again.

Ingredient Notes

  • Chicken – We’ll be using ground chicken for this recipe! You can swap it with ground turkey, but then you’ll technically be making turkey burgers.
  • Breadcrumbs – I typically just use plain breadcrumbs with no added flavors since I like to add the spices into the mix myself.
  • Egg – This is what binds it all together so the patties hold their shape while cooking.
  • White Onion – You can use a yellow onion in a pinch.
  • Spices – I use a mix of garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika and salt. Feel free to adjust these as desired! There’s plenty of wiggle room for creativity here.
  • Buns – Any sandwich buns will do the trick! Just use your favorites.
  • Mayonnaise – Any brand works. You can also ue low fat if desired, it won’t make much of a difference here.
  • Toppings – Butter lettuce, thick cut tomatoes and cheese are my favorite toppings for chicken burgers! Swiss or cheddar cheese are my go-to’s, but you can use any sliced cheese that you like the most. Be sure to comment below and let me know what worked for you!

Chicken Burgers

Chicken Burgers are unbelievably flavorful and juicy! Make them on the stove or the grill! They’re made with just a handful of simple, yet bold ingredients and hassle-free steps.
Prep 10 minutes
Cook 15 minutes
Total 25 minutes
Servings 6 Patties

Ingredients

  • 1 Pound Ground Chicken
  • 1/2 Cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1/2 White Onion diced
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cajun Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper
  • 6 Sesame or Brioche Buns toasted
  • 1/2 Cup Mayonnaise or more Optional
  • 1 Head Butter Lettuce
  • 1 Large Tomato cut into 6 slices
  • 6 Slices Cheddar Cheese or your favorite cheese

Instructions

Instructions for stove top:

  • Mix the chicken, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika and salt together just until combined.
  • Divide the mixture into 6 equal parts and form each part into a patty.
  • Heat a large skillet over low-high heat and coat the bottom with cooking oil.
  • Add three patties to the pan at a time and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until each side forms a light crust.
  • Remove them from the pan and let the excess oil drip off on a plate fitted with a paper towel.
  • Repeat the cooking process with the remaining uncooked patties.
  • Allow the patties to rest for 3-4 minutes before serving.
  • Spread the mayonnaise on each side of the toasted burger buns, then layer on a few pieces of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a cooked patty, a slice of cheese and then the top bun.

Instructions for Grilling:

  • Spray the grate on an electric grill with non-stick spray or brush with olive oil, then heat the grill to low medium heat.
  • Once hot, add the patties to the grill and cook on each side for 3-4 minutes, or until each side forms grill marks and a light crust.
  • Rest for 3-4minutes before serving.

Notes

NOTE:  The secret to a juicy chicken burger is to not over-work the meat, and also not to over cook it.  When mixing the burgers together, only mix just until combined and do so gently. Then, use a meat thermometer to make sure the meat is cooked through to 165 degrees and pull immediately off the pan or grill to prevent overcooking.
