Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes are rich and creamy and so easy to make! Making mashed potatoes has never been quicker or tasted better than these Instant Pot mashed potatoes ready in 20 minutes!
I am completely obsessed with how creamy and delicious these mashed potatoes turned out in my instant pot. I have been wanting to try mashed potatoes in my pressure cooker for a while now. Because, mashed potatoes are obviously one of the most delicious side dishes on the planet, but, I don't always feel like cooking them on a weeknight when we are busy. Now, I can have mashed potatoes ready in about 20 minutes and everyone absolutely loved them!
Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes:
Making mashed potatoes in the instant pot starts out just a simple and easy as if you were making mashed potatoes on the stove like my reader favorite Cream Cheese Mashed Potatoes.
You'll start out with three pounds of potatoes. This is about 6 medium potatoes total. Go ahead and peel them. I haven't tried this recipe leaving the skin on the potatoes because we prefer ours without skin.
Next, simply slice the potatoes into large rounds. For me, this came out to about 4-5 round slices per potato. There is no reason to spend time cutting them into cubes. You'll then cover them completely in water which will be about 4-5 cups depending on what size of instant pot you're using. The picture below shows the potato rounds in my 8 quart instant pot.
After the potatoes are covered in the water you will add ½ teaspoon of salt. This is just enough salt to flavor the potatoes while they cook without being overwhelming.
Then, that's it for now! Go ahead and place the lid on your instant pot. Set the valve to sealed and cook on manual for 8 minutes. Keep in mind that it will take about 8-10 minutes for the pot to come to pressure.
Once the timer goes off you can quick release the pressure from your pot. You will need to drain the potatoes and then return them to the instant pot with the power off.
Then, simply add in the remaining salt, pepper, garlic powder, butter, milk, and sour cream. The garlic powder is, of course, optional, but, we really love that extra bit of flavor in our mashed potatoes!
You can mash these up with a standard potato masher if you wish. Or, you can mash then whip them with a hand-held mixer which is what I love to do!
After your potatoes are mashed you are set to go and eat! Make sure to taste and double check the seasoning. I have listed the amounts to our preference, but, you may prefer to add more. Always season to your own taste.
Enjoy!

Great mashed potatoes. I did 4 lbs of potatoes and increased all the stuff by 1/3. These turned out amazing. Out new go to recipe!
This works PERFECTLY! The potatoes cook just right. I hand mashed them and NO LUMPS! No starchy sticky potatoes! I ALWAYS have trouble making potatoes right. This takes the guess work out and clean up is way easier. The seasonings were spot on. i did back off on salt a bit. I love my instant pot even more now!
My husband and I LOVE these mashed potatoes. I've probably made them 5+ times over the past few years. I've tried several recipes for Instant Pot mashed potatoes but this seasoning is the best. I love the combo with the garlic salt, and all the creaminess, YUM!
I just slice into thin rounds (~0.50 inch) WITHOUT peeling, then follow the directions on this recipe and they turn out great every time.
Big hit with the family!!
I made these and the potatoes turned out great but when I quick released the pressure there was potato water spraying everywhere! Has anyone else experienced this?
When you do a quick release on the instant pot with any kind of liquid you should open it REAL SLOW and if need be, use a mitt or towel because this thing can also be used for instant burns.
When it starts spitting liquid out you should immediately close the valve and wait a minute or two and repeat the same steps above.
Just be careful or risk a severe burn INSTANTLY.
I followed the recipe as written but next time I would add more time — maybe 10-12 minutes instead of 8. My potatoes were not fully cooked at the end. Still tasty, just didn’t fully mash up, even with a hand mixer, because they weren’t fully soft at the end of the cooking time.
This was so easy!! I left the peels on and it still turned out great!
These are the BEST homemade mashed potatoes I've ever made. Perfect ratio of potatoes/salt/butter/milk. I can't stop eating them while I wait for my rib roast to come out of the oven. Thank you for the recipe and Happy New Year!
Made this mash recipe (minus the garlic because we were going for childhood memories) and it was AMAZING. Part of why I stopped making “real” mashed potatoes is because I usually ended up with potato water, a messy stove top and not enough potatoes left to mash just wasn’t worth it to me but this recipe has brought us back to “real” mashed potatoes again. Thank you for sharing it!
Hi, I’m trying to figure out best way to MAKE AHEAD, and for 25!
I have to travel with them a couple of hours… Should I make and wait to mash, mash, mash and add everything and reheat? Any suggestions??
Recipe looks delish.
I would make ahead and transport in a warmed slow cooker. Place plastic wrap down on surface of potatoes before putting regular lid. Put in slow cooker base to help retain heat. Pack
n box surrounded by towels. If needed, place insert in hot oven to warm through. I’ve done this many times with good success.
Mashed potatoes actually freeze surprisingly well!! Just thaw and heat in the microwave, then add more milk or cream to add back a little moisture. I do this for huge time savings with weeknight dinners!
Excellent Mash potatoes! I add 2 peeled garlic cloves with the potatoes and when done mash with the potatoes and add a sprinkle parsley Best garlic mash potatoes EVER!
My adult son isn't a potato person but he loves these! I add Ranch powder for a little kick. But our families favorite mashed potato recipe. I have made many of your recipes and have not found one yet I didn't like. Thank you for sharing with us.
Is the manual pressure high or low for 8 minutes? I have a Crockpot Express rather than Instant Pot. Thanks!
I have made these on high pressure and they came out perfect so I assume she means high pressure but I’m not the original poster. Hope this helps
I have a Crockpot Express rather than Instant Pot - is the manual pressure high or low? I don't know if Instant Pot has that option or not.
Excellent recipe. Just a suggestion from my own experience: I mash them manually with a fork or a potato masher . Don't use an immersion blender!!! it releases too much starch, which makes the mashed potatoes too gummy.
These are the fastest and most delicious mashed potatoes I have ever made! Thank you for the recipe
So good! The potatoes come out perfectly cooked. I tend to over cook potatoes and this were just right.
5 stars! Easy and delicious!!
Perfection. Made as directed, but doubled the recipe.
When you double the recipe, do you increase the pressure cook time?
No . Same time for double amount .
