Hot Sausage Dip

Fall is here and that means game days and dips galore! If you’re looking to deviate from the standard buffalo dip and hot wings, this hot sausage dip is for you! Spicy breakfast sausage is mixed with savory ranch and garlic flavors while adding more heat with a dash of cajun seasoning to the mix. Blended into a base of cream cheese, sour cream, and melted cheddar cheese makes this dip to die for. Green onions add color and flavor and the whole thing is topped with extra cheddar and baked until golden. Serve this up with an array of crackers, some crusty bread rounds, pretzels, or even tortilla chips. Family and friends alike will adore this dip. I guarantee it’ll be gone long before halftime!

Dig into more dips like my warm and gooey Beer Cheese Dip. Looking for something to satisfy a sweet tooth? How about a sweet and creamy Pumpkin Dip? Easy to travel with and even easier to eat up.

Can this be made in the crockpot?

It sure can. Brown the sausage like normal then add all the ingredients minus the shredded cheese to the slow cooker. Cook on low until everything has melted. Stir in a cup of the shredded cheese until it melts as well. Keep the slow cooker on warm and top with the rest of the cheddar cheese until about 5 minutes prior to serving. Garnish with the extra green onions and dig in! Of course with this method the cheese on top won’t get that golden baked texture still a great option if you don’t have access to the oven and need to throw something together on the side!

How To Make Hot Sausage Dip

  • Brown. Use an oven safe skillet (or a regular one if you transfer this all into a casserole dish) to cook the breakfast sausage, crumbling it as you go.
  • Season. Once browned and drained, place the sausage back into the skillet and add in the green onions, ranch seasoning, garlic powder, and cajun seasoning. Stir to combine and cook for an additional one minute.
  • Stir. Stir in the cream cheese and sour cream until combined and melted. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in a cup of the shredded cheddar cheese. Continue stirring until it is fully melted as well.
  • Bake. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top and pop in the oven for 20 minutes. The top should be golden and bubbling.

Ingredients Notes for Hot Sausage Dip

  • Breakfast Sausage – Use your favorite brand and choose the spiciest or mild option you like! You can also use meatless sausage crumbles for a vegetarian option.
  • Green Onions – You’ll want ¼ cup for the dip itself and then I like to have some extra to use as a garnish at the end. If you really like onions you can add more, or leave out if you don’t want them.
  • Spices – Ranch seasoning, garlic powder, and Cajun seasoning. We’re going for flavorful with a touch of heat. If you like it spicier, add in a few teaspoons of your favorite hot sauce.
  • Cream Cheese – You can’t go wrong with a rich base of cream cheese. Especially for a dip. I like to use full fat cream cheese for dips like this, however light cream cheese works just as well.
  • Sour Cream – This tangy mixture blends with the cream cheese perfectly. You can substitute with plan greek yogurt if you want.
  • Cheddar Cheese – While I like cheddar, you could also try this recipe with colby jack or even monterrey jack for extra spice.
