Crockpot Shredded Chicken – a super easy Crockpot recipe for all purpose shredded chicken! Â This chicken is seasoned and slow cooked all day, then ready to use in any of your favorite wraps, tacos, or casseroles. Â Or, you can freeze it to use for later!
Out of all of the recipes on my blog, I have to say this simple, plain Jane looking crockpot full of chicken is one of my absolute favorites.
It’s one of those recipes that is a major lifesaver for me to keep on hand for all of the meal time madness.
This tastes just as good as a rotisserie chicken, but, you can make a BIG batch of it right at home and it lasts for up to two months in the freezer!
My recipe calls for using about 3 pounds of chicken – for me this is four large chicken breasts.
It goes right into the crockpot with some chicken broth and seasonings, and is really “set and forget” recipe because it can cook on low all day and still be amazingly juicy!
So, for the 3 pounds of chicken – I get about 6 cups of shredded chicken total.
Then, I just let it cool after shredding and save about two cups in the refrigerator for the week, and freeze the rest.
I typically save 1-2 cups per zip-lock back, but you can portion it out however you’d like!
You can also easily double this recipe if you want a plethora of shredded chicken on hand.
Another awesome use for this chicken is your weekly meal prep! Â It really does have all purpose flavor, and goes well with anything! Â Once it’s cooked and shredded you can add things like hot sauce, ranch dressing, taco seasoning, salsa….etc. Â and toss it into salads for the week – make life easier and your salad a little less boring!
Some of my fave ways to use this chicken are in my One Pot Buffalo Chicken Tortellini, these Crispy Chicken Wraps, and my BBQ Ranch Chicken Tacos.
Enjoy!

Hello
I have had such a hard time with crock pot shredded chicken! I only want to cook 2 large breasts (about 1 to 1.5 lbs). How much broth should I use and how long on low should I cook it for? And if I were to do it on high, how long? Is low or high preferable? Thanks a ton!
Hi! I would just cut down to 1/2 cup of broth, but it wouldn’t hurt to use the full cup either. On high I’d do about 2 hours. Hope that helps.
Thank you! And on low, 4 hours? Or will it get too dry?
Just made this tonight! The texture and the flavor of the chicken are so perfect! Thank you for this recipe!
Great recipe! I make it on Sunday and use it for salads throughout the week. Thanks!
How many sandwiches can you get for this recipe? I’m having a large crowd!!
So simple and the results are delicious. I limited the added salt since the chicken broth contains salt. I’ll be using this for enchiladas tonight!
My husband and I made this recipe for the first time yesterday, and it was fantastic! Thank you for the great recipe, Nichole – the chicken is going to make for some great leftovers all week long!
Would this work for making pulled chicken sandwiches immediately after shredding? Or is it too juicy that it would make the buns too soggy?
You can definitely use for pulled chicken sandwiches! Just remove the chicken from the liquid, shred, and add your bbq sauce or rub mix that you want to use 🙂
Shred the chicken with a hand mixer and all the juices will soak back into the chicken. It is perfect and not too soggy.
Cool idea! I can’t wait to try it!
Can I use frozen chicken breasts? Or should they already be thawed out?
Yes, frozen is fine 🙂
Wjat is the best way to reheat it after you freeze it?
This is almost identical to an instant pot recipe I make, but needed a slow cooker version and this fit the bill! I used a half tablespoon of all the seasonings, and used seasoned salt instead of regular salt. It is so yummy! Thank you!
