Crockpot Shredded Chicken – a super easy Crockpot recipe for all purpose shredded chicken! This chicken is seasoned and slow cooked all day, then ready to use in any of your favorite wraps, tacos, or casseroles. Or, you can freeze it to use for later!
Out of all of the recipes on my blog, I have to say this simple, plain Jane looking crockpot full of chicken is one of my absolute favorites.
It’s one of those recipes that is a major lifesaver for me to keep on hand for all of the meal time madness.
This tastes just as good as a rotisserie chicken, but, you can make a BIG batch of it right at home and it lasts for up to two months in the freezer!
My recipe calls for using about 3 pounds of chicken – for me this is four large chicken breasts.
It goes right into the crockpot with some chicken broth and seasonings, and is really “set and forget” recipe because it can cook on low all day and still be amazingly juicy!
So, for the 3 pounds of chicken – I get about 6 cups of shredded chicken total.
Then, I just let it cool after shredding and save about two cups in the refrigerator for the week, and freeze the rest.
I typically save 1-2 cups per zip-lock back, but you can portion it out however you’d like!
You can also easily double this recipe if you want a plethora of shredded chicken on hand.
Another awesome use for this chicken is your weekly meal prep! It really does have all purpose flavor, and goes well with anything! Once it’s cooked and shredded you can add things like hot sauce, ranch dressing, taco seasoning, salsa….etc. and toss it into salads for the week – make life easier and your salad a little less boring!
Some of my fave ways to use this chicken are in my One Pot Buffalo Chicken Tortellini, these Crispy Chicken Wraps, and my BBQ Ranch Chicken Tacos.
Enjoy!

Solid recipe for making your own shredded chicken. I’ve used this several times for enchiladas. Always happy. Very simple!
I have made this recipe again and again and it turns out juicy and great every time. I have used this chicken in my chicken enchilada soup, tacos, enchiladas and just to eat. Easy and YUM!
Love this recipe…so simple to make. Salad topping, or subs…to making dips. I jusy made a batch today for a buffalo chicken dip. I did not have chicken broth, but substituted a cup of water and a powdered chicken base. Perfect!
Easy and delicious! It was the only recipe I found that just addressed simply seasoned pulled chicken. It allows for any additional seasonings and recipe applications later if desired. I had just the right amount of chicken, too! Thank you so much!
I have made this recipe twice and it is ideal for meal prep! I am a teacher, so I love making this chicken for practically any meal that involves chicken.
I must have a crockpot that is extremely to hot when I use it, because 3 to 4 hours is way too long.
So simple and delicious! Works great when you have a big family! Thank you!
Do you get better results cooking on low or high? I read through the reviews and I don’t believe anyone mentioned what temperature they used. Also , have you ever tried thus method using frozen chicken?
I personally prefer the chicken cooked on low. It seems to be more moist and easier to shred for me. That being said, it still turns out well when I cook it on high if I’m in a hurry!
I made this for the first time tonight and It was so easy. It will be a steady recipe monthly for me just because it is so easy and can freeze too. The taste was very good. Not too spicy, just well seasoned chicken.
Easy and great tasting recipe, thank you! Will make meal prep so much faster as I just have to thaw the individual bag of shredded chicken, wonderful tip.
I used 1 teaspoon of Montreal Chicken Seasoning instead of black pepper. I think it would taste great as written also.
I only have boneless skinless chicken thighs, do you think they would work ok?
