Peanut Butter Bread

Did you know, recipes for peanut butter bread go all the way back to the Depression era 1930s? With resources like flour and sugar hard to come by, people had to get creative with their rations. Enter in peanut butter bread. It uses less flour than traditional bread and bakes up a dense and hearty loaf perfect for a snack or sweet treat without being overindulgent. I love how you can practically top peanut butter bread with just about anything and it’s delicious. Nutella, honey, your favorite jelly, you could even put more peanut butter on top! A simple dollop of butter or as it is, is of course a delicious option as well. This makes for an easy and filling grab and go breakfast or a simple dessert when you have just a little bit of a sweet tooth after dinner.

Can I add anything to my bread?

You sure can! Loaves like this are perfect to customize because the base is so simple and the flavor is just enough to not be super overpowering. Try adding in chocolate chips (or maybe even white chocolate chips for a change) for an amazing chocolate and peanut butter combo. Add nuts for texture and crunch. You could also sprinkle in some nutmeg and cinnamon for a spiced version. Dried fruit like cranberries or raisins would also be a fun twist!

How To Make Peanut Butter Bread

  • Preheat. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a 9 inch loaf pan with parchment paper (you can also spray with non-stick cooking spray as an extra precaution). Set aside.
  • Whisk. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Stir. In a larger mixing bowl, stir together the creamy peanut butter, white sugar, brown sugar, and egg. Pour in the milk and stir again until fully incorporated.
  • Combine. Add the flour mixture into the peanut butter mixture and stir until just combined. Don’t worry, it will still be slightly lumpy. You don’t want to overmix or the bread comes out too heavy and dense.
  • Bake. Pour the peanut butter bread batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 50-55 minutes. Test it by inserting a toothpick into the center, the bread is done when the toothpick comes out clean.
  • Serve. Let the bread cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!

Storing Peanut Butter Bread

Store leftover peanut butter bread in an airtight container on your counter. It will stay fresh for up to a week at room temperature.

Ingredients Notes for Peanut Butter Bread

  • Flour – All purpose flour will give you the best base for this bread. You can try self rising flour as an alternative but skip the salt and baking powder if you do.
  • Baking Powder – We want this bread to rise to the occasion. Just double check the label and make sure it’s not expired!
  • Salt – Just enough to enhance the sweet flavors of the bread.
  • Peanut Butter – I used creamy peanut butter for my recipe but you could experiment with crunchy for some texture.
  • Sugar – You’ll want both granulated and packed brown sugar for this recipe.
  • Egg – One large egg at room temperature. Make sure you let it sit after taking it out of the fridge.
  • Milk – Also at room temperature. You can use whole milk or whatever you have on hand. Just be aware milks like almond, oat, or soy have thinner consistencies.
