Apple Dump Cake:

Dump cakes are truly one of my all time favorite desserts because they’re so easy!  Made up of pantry staples all you need is some pie filling, cake mix, cinnamon, and butter to whip this up.  One of our first desserts that was super popular on the blog was our Strawberry Cake Mix Cookies.  Keeping a cake mix on hand in the pantry is always a good idea!  This apple cake just screams fall, and everyone always loves and is so impressed by it!  This is a go-to cake for me on fall weekends, especially for football game days to have a fast dessert.

To make this cake all you have to do is “dump” everything together, hence the name!  You will dump 2 cans of apple pie filling into a large, greased 9×13 inch dish.  Then, sprinkle over your cake mix and cinnamon without stirring.  After that, just slice up 12 Tablespoons of butter and lay them evenly over the top of the dry cake.  Then, bake!  The magic happens in the oven!

Apple Dump Cake Questions and Answers!

Can I use a spice cake mix instead of the yellow cake mix?
YES! This is a great substitution. It gives you a lot more flavor to the topping. I would just eliminate the extra cinnamon.

There seems to be a dry spot on the cake. Is there anything I can do to fix it?
Yes, add another slice of butter right to the top of the dry spot and place it back in the oven for a few minutes until the butter has melted and helps penetrate the dry spot.

How do I store this cake and how long is it good for?
You can store this in an airtight container in the fridge, and it’s good for 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator. After that, the topping starts to get a little too soft and mushy, but it still tastes good.

Why don’t you stir the cake?
The whole premise of a dump cake is you are just adding the ingredients to the pan. When you’re adding them in these layers, it will create a crust over the apple pie filling. The butter will add moisture to the cake mix.

  1. I love this recipe! I made two changes, one of them I do for all dump cake recipes. The first, for this recipe specifically, I used a spice cake instead of a yellow cake mix and omitted the cinnamon. The change I make for all dump cake recipes is that instead of pats of butter all over the top, I melt one stick of butter and mix it with the cake mix. (It looks like a crumb topping). By doing this, there’s no powdery spots on top of the finished desert and it is more like a cobbler.
