What is in a Margherita Pizza?
Margherita pizza history has it that this Neapolitan pie was created in 1889, when Italian chef Raffaele Esposito visited Queen Margherita of Savoy in Naples and was tasked with making her a special dish. Esposito and his wife whipped up a pizza using basil, mozzarella and tomato sauce to resemble the Italian flag. They appropriately dubbed it the “Margherita Pizza” after the Queen herself.
Without sacrificing authenticity, I will show you how to make a Margherita pizza minus all the fuss of making traditional pizza dough. The Miracle Pizza Dough allows you to make the perfect crust in a fraction of the time. Now that’s a pizza, fit for a queen! If you have any leftover dough, use it for this Garlic Knots Recipe.
Dough to Use for Margherita Pizza
The Miracle Pizza Dough uses a higher amount of yeast, completely eliminating the rising process! If you’ve made pizza dough before, you know that the rising process is the most time-consuming part.
You can also make Flatbread Margherita Pizza, if you prefer a quicker option.
Sauce to Use for Margherita Pizza
Margherita Pizza is delicious in its simplicity. But since this pizza is so minimalist, you are going to want a knock-out pizza sauce that can stand alone. Try the Easy Pizza Sauce, it tastes fresh from the garden, yet it only requires canned tomatoes!
Toppings for Margherita Pizza
The key to making an authentic Margherita pizza is picking the freshest of the fresh ingredients. Grab mozzarella pieces packed in water or brine. This type of mozzarella is creamier and melts much better than the pre-shredded or log-style versions.
Dry basil just won’t cut it for a Margherita pizza. Get fresh basil leaves and hand tear them into rustic pieces. Sprinkle them on top of your fresh-out-of-the-oven pie, adding a pop of flavor and color!
Making Margherita Pizza
First, spread out the dough into a shape of your preference, follow by adding the sauce. Be mindful not to spread it too close to the edges of the dough, leaving enough space for the crust. Then, place your mozzarella pieces on top. You can half the mozzarella pieces, or place them on the pizza as a whole. It’s up to you!
Pop the pizza back into the oven for 10 minutes. As soon as you take it out, sprinkle on the basil leaf pieces. Now, that’s all!
