Alfredo Sauce

Alfredo Sauce:

Alfredo sauce is one of my favorite things to have with a big bowl of pasta!  It’s a very rich and indulgent treat for dinner.  I also love that it only takes about 5-10 minutes to whip up a batch!  This recipe will yield about two cups of sauce total.  It can easily be doubled if you are feeding a crowd or want extra for later.  The bottled Alfredo just doesn’t compare to this delicious homemade version!  If you love cooking from scratch, make some of this Homemade Pasta to go along with your sauce!

What is Alfredo Sauce?

Traditional Alfredo is a simple white/cream sauce.  It is made from butter, heavy cream, and parmesan cheese.  While the original style is great, I simply like to add garlic, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning to make Alfredo sauce taste even better!

how to make alfredo sauce

How to Make Alfredo Sauce:

  • The first step to making Alfredo is to warm your butter and cream in a large saucepan over low heat.  You will let it simmer (but not boil) for about 2 minutes.
  • Next, you will whisk in your garlic and seasonings.  Whisking constantly for about one minute just to let the garlic cook.
  • Lastly, you will add your parmesan cheese and stir just until the cheese has melted and your sauce is smooth.

Note that it is best to use freshly grated parmesan cheese right off of the block so that your sauce isn’t grainy.  I do not recommend using the “shaker” style container grated cheese for this recipe.

The Parmesan will thicken this sauce up.  If it isn’t quite thick enough, allow the sauce to stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.

Looked up this recipe on google and saw the rating. I decided to give it a go. My wife and I were gardening all day and when I broke to make dinner I was too tired to grind the parmesan block we had. I cheated and went against the recommendations on using the shaker style cheese (in my case, Kraft parmesan). I made sure I broke down the few lumps I had as I incorporated the cheese into the recipe. Also, I only had half & half and not heavy cream but I went ahead anyway as lots of times I substitute the half & half when I don’t have the heavy cream (35%). It worked fine. I had no problem with lumpiness with either the cheese or the bottled minced garlic I used ….I know, another cheat. Anyway, this recipe was terrific! I will make it again. Thank you salty marshmallow for this.

This was absolutely delicious! I made a quick dinner cutting up a ready to eat roasted chicken, a bag of mixed vegetables and two 9 oz packages of fresh prosciutto and cheese tortellini. The tortellini cooked in 2 minutes so this meal was ready in no time. Poured the sauce over it, gave it a toss and the family LOVED it. One suggestion, I’d say parmesan is a salty cheese, so I didn’t add any salt. I also found half a teaspoon of garlic powder was enough..so add a little at a time..you can always add more, but can’t take it back! Thanks for sharing this recipe! A definite keeper!

    1. “I also found half a teaspoon of garlic powder was enough” recipe called for minced garlic, so cutting back on powdered garlic would make sense

I had a favorite Alfredo recipe that I’ve been making for 15 years, which my family all loved. Decided to try this recipe to change it up a bit. DELICIOUS!! Our new family favorite Alfredo recipe. Tastes so much like authentic restaurant sauce. Added French bread and olive oil with pesto dip to complete the meal. ❤️
