Best Homemade Alfredo Sauce is rich, creamy, and packed with garlic parmesan flavor! This Alfredo Sauce is easy to make and perfect with your favorite pasta!
Alfredo Sauce:
Alfredo sauce is one of my favorite things to have with a big bowl of pasta! It's a very rich and indulgent treat for dinner. I also love that it only takes about 5-10 minutes to whip up a batch! This recipe will yield about two cups of sauce total. It can easily be doubled if you are feeding a crowd or want extra for later. The bottled Alfredo just doesn't compare to this delicious homemade version! If you love cooking from scratch, make some of this Homemade Pasta to go along with your sauce!
What is Alfredo Sauce?
Traditional Alfredo is a simple white/cream sauce. It is made from butter, heavy cream, and parmesan cheese. While the original style is great, I simply like to add garlic, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning to make Alfredo sauce taste even better!
How to Make Alfredo Sauce:
- The first step to making Alfredo is to warm your butter and cream in a large saucepan over low heat. You will let it simmer (but not boil) for about 2 minutes.
- Next, you will whisk in your garlic and seasonings. Whisking constantly for about one minute just to let the garlic cook.
- Lastly, you will add your parmesan cheese and stir just until the cheese has melted and your sauce is smooth.
Note that it is best to use freshly grated parmesan cheese right off of the block so that your sauce isn't grainy. I do not recommend using the "shaker" style container grated cheese for this recipe.
The Parmesan will thicken this sauce up. If it isn't quite thick enough, allow the sauce to stand for 2-3 minutes before serving.

Best alfredo sauce ever. I will never buy a jar again.
Hi! Do you melt the butter in the pan first then add the cream?
Use this recipe every time. We absolutely love it!!
Yum! My first try at making alfredo turned out great 🙂 Even got great job Mom from my kids.
The sauce was so thin and watery. What did I do wrong?
You may have had too much cream or not enough cheese. I doubled the recipe. I used 2- 5 oz containers of Parmesan cheese and 1-5 oz container of Romano cheese. I let it simmer then added my Italian seasoning and Garlic powder. It was great!!
I just now made this too. I didn't really measure the cream, I was running low so I added some half & half too. I added more than called for because I wanted it extra saucy. I only had a 5oz parm, but once I got the noodles in and I added chicken, I added some of the pasta water, I also didn't drain the pasta, I just used my spider type tool and moved it over. That pasta water helps to thicken it. I saved it on the stove to add some more before I store it in the frig as I'm sure it will soak up a lot of the sauce. Pasta water is a lifesaver!
My absolute favorite recipe! I use half a cup of unsalted butter and it's perfect! I do advise waiting to add the salt until after you've added the cheese, then salt to taste.
Pretty good! Was a bit salty and I love salt. Also I would reduce the amount of Parmesan by an ounce or two. Loved otherwise
Thank You So easy to make and so delicious 😋
Thank You for sharing this recipe
Never buying the jar again.
What would cause the parmesan cheese not to blend and just Chunk up cuz I just made the recipe and I had that problem
You probably had the heat too high, and add a little at a time
Did you use freshly grated parmasean on the powdered one on the green jar from Kraft?
Why buy jar when this is so easy!
Very good, how ever it was salty so next time I will eliminate or reduce 1/2 tsp salt.
Try using unsalted butter as well.
Made this at my bridal shower and half the girls demanded the recipe! It’s amazing!
Can you use bags of parmesan cheese?
No, you must use freshly grated off the block for this recipe
Why? What does it change if we use bag cheese?
I used bagged Parmesan and it turned out perfect Nichole. It may be a bit better freshly shaved but it was still delicious otherwise.
Hi! I'm glad it worked out for you! However, most people don't have the same luck so I will still recommend freshly grated 🙂
Sooo good. Better than jar sauce any day! Thank you for sharing this amazing recipe!
Super easy to make. Sad to say 63 years old made my first Alfredo sauce. Tasted like high end pasta dish. Didn't look it but plating not my thing. But PLEASE use a good quantity cheese. My daughter scolded me cause I bought a higher end Italian cheese aged for over 2 years. Will not go back to the bottle again. Grand baby's cleaned their bowls. Then bragged to me even knowing desert isn't till tomorrow 🙃
This was the best homemade Alfredo sauce I’ve ever made! My Son loved it and it’s hard to please a picking kid! Thank you and yes the Italian seasoning definitely gives it the kick I loved! 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am not a buy in the jar Alfredo fan, this recipe is amazing and so easy! It did take a little longer to make to get it a little thicker, but still very thin! Such amazing flavor!
I thought this was really good and very easy. Tasted much better than bottled fettuccine Alfredo! Thanks so much for sharing!
Girrrrrrrl “you put your foot” in this sauce! My fiancé has always loved Alfredo but purchased his sauce in a jar. Tonight I told him we’re making our own and the minute he tasted it, he threw down the spoon and demanded a hi-five! Safe to say we LOVE IT!
LOVE THIS! SOOO easy!!! Found that to warm it up without separating, warm the alfredo sauce separately, mix, then add to pasta.
SUPER SIMPLE!! FAST FAST FAST!Love this, thank you! 🙂
Btw, i ended up roasting my garlic on the stove as well and just roasted all the bulbs i had and put them in a jar with the oil! Great idea
Sauce is fantastic! I added a little extra garlic... personal preference. Delicious
Really nuce and yummy. I added a bit of red sauce and cooked some chicken! Delicious
